Here’s a unique, zero waste, vegan friendly recipe for plant-based bacon: Amateur Baker Natasha Lycia Ora Bannan’s Banana Bacon!
Natasha Lycia Ora Bannan is all about banana-based recipes and ingredient alternatives. Many people know that bananas make for a great egg substitute in many baked good recipes. But did you know that you can also use banana scraps for vegan and vegetarian dishes as well? Recently, things got a little creative in Natasha’s kitchen when she discovered that you can make a bacon alternative out of banana peels! Here’s how:
Ingredients
- Banana peels
- Soy sauce
- Maple syrup
- Smoke paprika
- Garlic powder
- Avocado oil
Instructions
Step 1: Select ripe or overripe banana peels for this recipe. In Natasha Lycia Ora Bannan’s banana peel bacon baking experience, the Amateur Baker finds that riper banana peels taste better overall. Pro tip: reach for the bananas with a good amount of brown spots!
Step 2: Lightly scrape out remaining banana from each peel.
Step 3: Combine soy sauce, maple syrup, smoked paprika and garlic powder in a bowl. Add peels into the mixture and allow to sit for at least 10 minutes in the sauce marinade. Natasha enjoys letting her banana bacon sit for at least an hour, to ensure deep marination.
Step 4: Preheat the oven to 375 F. Bake banana peel bacon for 20 minutes, flipping halfway through. Cook until desired crispiness is achieved for an additional 10+ minutes. Enjoy!
